RECENT STEVENS TRAIL HIKES INDEX

This classic and popular Northern California trail hike is easily reached. On Interstate 80, about 60 miles east from downtown Sacramento, CA, exit at the main Colfax Exit. Come to the south side of the freeway, and take the paved frontage road east along the side of the Interstate. A sign warning dead end road points out the way. Also, larger vehicles may not be able to turn-around. About a mile east from the freeway exit, signs indicate the trail, and gravel parking. There is room for only about 20 cars. Please respect the landowners in the area. There is now a trailhead outhouse, with no running water. No facilities or services are found further along the trail.

The trailhead sign states 4.5 miles (one-way) to the end of the trail, at the confluence of the North Fork of the American River and Secret Creek. The total gain, or loss, is about 1,000 feet. A few signs indicate the trail, further along. You can get lost. There is poison oak, bears, and mountain lions. Be aware of your surroundings, and have a good map with compass, or a GPS unit. Bring water. You may wish to have a hat, sunscreen, and some energy food. Hikers unsteady about heights may not like the narrow trail, at points. Mountain bikers have used the trail, and many people walk their dogs. You may not have cell phone reception along most of the trail. The use of this trail comes with your own risk. The United States Bureau of Land Management is the responsible agency.
