A RENO VISIT AND A TRUCKEE RIVERWALK March 22-23, 2000

Having received an e-mail for an excellent mid-week room rate at the casino hotel that I often go to, I left home Wednesday to enjoy the food, shopping, and walking about in Reno, Nevada.

At the Patagonia Outlet, I purchased a pair of mitts for $10. I had a nice buffet lunch, then checked into my room on the 11th floor, and walked over to the Reno Main Library to read the local papers. Having soup for dinner, I retired early. But, in the evening, I spotted lenticular clouds from my hotel window view to the north. It wasn't really windy here at the Truckee Meadows Basin, but it must have been higher up.

Thursday, the day dawned a bit cloudy. I decided to stay over for the Sierra Club evening hike. These are run after work midweek, offering a chance for some brisk exercise and some social opportunities. Beforehand, however, I took another walk to the library, then chose to do six miles along the Truckee River trail. There were a few other persons using the paved bike path.

Getting back to the downtown area, I had drink and soup at a small cafe, and visited Planet Hollywood for another drink and to see the movie props and costume displays. I drove over to the Historical Museum at UNR, noted the early 1900's panorama photography, and bought two little vials of flaked gold and silver at the museum store. These would make good paperweights and beautiful souvenirs.

I did some more shopping, then met the Great Basin Group evening hike at 5:30 p.m. at Rock Park. We had a fair showing of participants, and walked briskly east along the Truckee River about a mile and a half. The sunset was passable, but I took a few pictures anyway. We came back to the parking lot by 6:45 p.m.

Heading home, I stopped for drink and a cheeseburger, and was home by about 9:40 p.m. I had walked a total of about 10-11 miles, and spent some $85. I had even won some change at cards and slots.
