BLACK WARRIOR PEAK (6,336') December 18, 1999

I chose to attend a Sierra Club GBG activity to climb this picturesque mountain situated in the Nevada desert just east of Pyramid Lake. Driving up Interstate 80 in the morning, I snapped a few pictures of the peaks enroute.

Meeting Saturday morning in Reno, NV, we carpooled to the Reservation town of Nixon, then took 4WD roads to a point about two miles southwest of the peak. Hiking up the road for a short distance, we climbed cross-country and contoured around to the southern side of the cliffy summit. A steep, rocky, loose chute led directly to the top.

The views were dimmed by the clouds that had moved in, but the immense open spaces beckoned to us to look and enjoy. The climb had taken about two hours. After lunch and photos, we descended the same way we had climbed, and were back to the trucks by about 2:30 p.m. The leader's navigation was very good, and the entire group had a great time.

The hike was perhaps about 4 miles round trip with about 1,000 feet of gain. I snapped about a roll of Kodachrome and wore a couple layers to stay warm. The group was nice enough to give me a ride to the start, as my car would have been stopped back when leaving pavement.
